Monitor Humidity in Gearboxes
Humidity indicator cards that change colors at different relative humidity levels can be used inside large spare gearboxes and similar stored machines. Inspect the cards periodically for excessive moisture. Bags of desiccant can be placed in the gearboxes to adsorb moisture that has ingressed. The gearboxes should be marked as "not ready for use."
Combining Vibration and Oil Analysis
Combining Vibration and Oil Analysis
Vibration is a powerful tool, as is oil analysis. When you merge the two together, you get a much clearer picture of what is happening inside the machine and can better predict when a failure might occur.

For these general reasons, corrosion-related problems often begin to show up at these later stages of life. Can these be prevented? In most cases, yes, although sometimes it’s too late when the failure occurs.
